Hey Carol! Jul 18 08:18 05, Carol Shenkenberger wrote to Maurice Kinal: CS> VMS is a *nix varient . Are you sure about that? Didn't seem the same to me. Besides VMS is (was?) big endian whereas all Unices I've run across are little endian, including Linux. Early DOS reminded me somewhat of VMS, moreso then it did of Solaris, which is the first Unix I ever encountered (pre DOS daze). I recall having to relearn EVERYTHING when sitting behind the Sparc. Totally different but once I started catching on I was totally spoiled and then absolutely hated DOS afterwards. First thing I ever did after buying my first PC (386) was to get a C compiler and try replicating Solaris. Man was that painful. Started with Linux on my first 486 and haven't regretted that. Thankfully I escaped the GUI on the PC so the move was far less painful for me then it is for most. Also my recollections of VAX/VMS helped ease any apprehensions I may have had at the time. The rest of the years since, is having the most stable PCs available in the local area, including other Linux systems. I have learned to make these things sing, my SMP toy being my favorite but the little guys are totally fun too for different reasons. --- Msged/LNX 6.1.2* Origin: The Pointy Stick Society XV - Linux Point (1:261/38.9) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 5030/786 @PATH: 261/38 123/500 106/2000 633/267 |
