The pool of men and women is basically the same in North America as it
has been since the end of WWII, there were less men after that war.

I think many men are being pickier. Look at college for example. There
are so many almost identical (physically) women there, that the women
have to complete for the same men. Many guys will never enter a
long-term relationship and still have sex 3-4 times a week.  The ugly
guy bagging the beautiful girl tale is coming true all over college
campuses. The difference is at the end, the guy has to tell her to quit
calling, she is freaking him out.
