Whoops - sorry John and everyone out there.  Put the cursor inside the field 
and tap F9 to update.  Use this method "Insert as field" only if you want the 
AutoText item to Update the date every time you use the item.  Otherwise make 
sure that box is not crossed, or type in the date yourself.
Sorry about that but on re-reading my original message I gave the correct 
Function key.  And it is not possible to Undo once one has Ctrl Z'ed.
Oh that life had 99 Undos or even one Undo button.
