After applying Roger's fix, I changed Kurt's & Roger's version back to
notrail() and added it to SNIPPETS. I then restored my two working line
solution as rmtrail(), so now folks can see both. I made the test code
identical for each and retested them as posted to SNIPPETS, and found no
timing difference. This leads to two possible conclusions: 1) there never
really was a timing difference, except as a testing artifact, or 2) the
library strlen() call in my original is faster than the equivalent
functionality in C. Both are, IMO, equally likely.
