Some people init with a simple AT&F1&K3, although I use ATZ with Binkley, having already written AT&F1&K3&W manually (there's a good reason for this, as USR modems actually store the baud [bit] rate in NVRAM, so you need to perform an &W with DTE already locked to your preferred speed).
