I seem to see the British government moving heaven & earth to ensure
that the US is not directly linked in.

In theory you could say "coalition troops seized from within Iraqi
sovereign territory by military units of Iran".

However it is interesting that's the sort of phrasing which HMG is
studiously ignoring.

Ho hum. Saint Ronnie of Reagan not merely negotiated with them to get the
embassy people back but got on so well with them that they were able to
give him a shopping list of current US Mil kits they required.
