You can die from water intoxication, hyponatremia. When we were kids and got a bee/wasp/hornet/you-name-it sting mom would apply damp tobacco to the welt and the sting went away in short order. Not sure not if it was mom's care or the tobacco - and I'm not willing to be a subject in further testing - but I remember quick relief.
