If you've finished bashing yourself, you may like to know that I replaced
my rmtrail.c in SNIPPETS with yours. I renamed it, of course, and included
snip_str.h for its prototype. I also replaced your test harness with the
one I was using so I run meaningful comparison timings. It turns out your
version is consistently 1 msec. faster running on my machine (1.8 GHz P4,
Win2kPro) than mine was.

(As soon as I get the APPS section up, I'll post my TIMAX program which I
used to time it. It works just like Unix timex, except you can specify a
time out in seconds, after which it will give up and kill the process
being timed. It compiles cleanly and works under both Win32 and Linux.
It's great for use in batch files where you don't want an overnight test
to hang up.)
