Hello Roger -

CA>>> To be honest I don't really know what '.NET' is. It
CA>>> appears to be some combination of an IDE, 'Visual[pick
CA>>> your language]', CVS, and a VM all rolled into one. I'm
CA>>> probably not understanding the descriptions I've been
CA>>> reading of what it is supposed to be.

RS>> It's a marketing term. Something that absolutely anyone
RS>> (even a corporate executive) can remember. The version
RS>> known as .NET is

CA>>> So ... if I'm understanding your description my 'concept'
CA>>> of what '.NET' is was reasonably close (see my above
CA>>> paragraph)?

RS> To be honest... I don't get that from your description. The
RS> .NET runtime would be the VM, and Visual Source Safe would
RS> be the CVS, and there is an IDE. ...hmmm, now that I think
RS> about it, my description wasn't much better. :-)

S'Okay, I think I know what it is now. ;-)

RS> --8<--cut

RS>> This latest version is a fresh implementation and really a
RS>> huge improvement.

CA>>> Sorry, you lost me. What "lastest version" are you
CA>>> referring to

CA>> > now?

RS> Oh... I am referring to the version known as ASP.NET. If
RS> you browse to some of the ASP tutorial sites you'll see
RS> mention of ASP and ASP.NET.

Ah ... OK, now I understand.

RS>> Well yeah, I know that youngsters have taken a liking to
RS>> it.

CA>>> Young people like any new language that is too new for
CA>>> anyone older than them to already have learned. It offers
CA>>> them an even playing field in terms of who gets to be in
CA>>> charge. ;-)

RS> Yeah, well there is one thing we have over them. Life
RS> experience.

You lost me again, what is a "life"? ;-)

CA>>> I believe you but for some reason sed just reminds me of
CA>>> edlin at least conceptually if nothing else. Edlin is
CA>>> scriptable and I have used it that way in the past.

RS> Sounds like you have some painful edlin memories.

Some painful ones but good ones too. I was using debug and
edline scripting to do very small ASM projects for awhile. It
was quite fast and I could put everything on a floppy (even the
small 360K floppies). I created my version of the DOS "CHOICE"
external command called "OPTION" (all 100 bytes of it) using
debug and edline scripting. The binary for 'option' is
available for downloading from my website.
