The above is noticeably from the oriental school wherein depictions of
people (in general) is very strong.
The steppes nomads have (in general) always maintained their own version of
islam (e.g. much stronger on the sufic thought in general) & what's
missing from today's islam is the bokhara/samarkand school of thought being
treated equally to the Arab/Saudi view.
Indeed any view being treated equally to those of the "land of the 2
holy mosques".
The general view within islam has always tended towards avoidance of idolatry.
Any islamic movement which wished to do as mark suggested is definitely not
going to be following the sufic/steppes line of thought so it is highly
likely that they'd take the traditional avoidance of idols route.
