New Zealand has a high (and increasing) incidence of childhood allergies
such as asthma. These have been linked to "excessive" cleanliness
in their early childhood environment. We knew this and certainly didn't go
overboard in cleaning around our children, we took the view that a little
dust and dirt didn't matter so long as there was nothing toxic within reach
for them to ingest. For example, some people bathe infants and toddlers
daily, when once a week is enough provided they've not been rolling in
something. Our kids have certainly been free of the usual run of childhood
infections and ailments suffered by many of their contemporaries.
