ZR> Great!! I'd really like to share info with you about the Cherokee
ZR> nation as I
ZR> am also part Cherokee.. about 1/8 I think. I think that is so great
ZR> that you
ZR> can still get the benefit of the drumming... do you go to PowWow's
ZR> there? Having driven through your area lately I am aware how many
ZR> native resources you have.
I would be glad to have you share what you know. I have never been
to a PowWow yet. we are generally too busy to keep up with what is
going on in the NA reservation here. However, there is a NA shop in
Tacoma that I plan to go down and see somewhere around the christmas
holidays.
ZR> On the way home I stopped at a wonderful Native American museum in
ZR> Northern California... just north of Redwood State Park -- it has
ZR> displays and info on tribes from all over the continent. We plan to go
ZR> back there in a few months,
ZR> though it is an all-day drive to get there from here... quite a nice
ZR> drive through that area, though, with all the redwood forests..
Sounds like fun!
ZR> How's it going? I think that because of the school district group I'm
ZR> in here
ZR> I won't be looking for another group. Already the Pittsburg group has
ZR> 45+ families and we are planning social outings, like park days and a
ZR> camping trip
ZR> and other field trips. I'm going to suggest Chaw-Se (Indian Grinding
ZR> Rock State Park) for the camping trip. There is a great Miwuk Indian
ZR> museum there,
ZR> with good hands-on exhibits for the kids. :) There's also two
ZR> reconstructed villages with teepees of cedar bark, and a large onikare
ZR> (sweat lodge) sacred
ZR> house... there are powwows there every year. What I really liked was
ZR> a self-guided tour trail that taught the names and uses of many of the
ZR> plants used by the Miwuks. I'm into plant ID and herbs... and so the
ZR> trail thrilled
ZR> me but I was really impressed that by the end of the trail even Aaron
ZR> (my homeschooler, age 6) was getting enthusiastic about identifying
ZR> the plants and
ZR> calling them by the right names. :)
That is great!! Due to circumstances, I won't be homeschooling
full-time this year, however, she will still go to Kindergarden all
year and I will supplement what I can at home after I have moved and
settled down into the apt that I want.
ZR> Oh, speaking of hands-on exibits for kids, one of the /best/ museums
ZR> for kids
ZR> that I've ever visited is right in your area -- the Seattle Museum of
ZR> Industry
ZR> and History. We /really/ had a great time there. My kids were
ZR> enthralled by
ZR> the shipping/water industry area and I got to see quite a bit of the
ZR> rest of the museum while they were actively playing in just that one
ZR> area. Have you been there yet?
Nope, not yet. I hate Seattle Traffic!! I may make that a plan for
next summer depending on if I am going to be working or not. My
oldest will be babysitting. Thank Goodness for Teenagers!! .
There is also a Science Museum there and I just might make a trip up
there in November as part of Naomi's Birthday.
ZR> BTW, I also have a daughter named Naomi. How old is your daughter?
ZR> My Naomi
ZR> is 15 and lives with my ex-husband, so I can't homeschool her... but
ZR> it is one very nice name. :) I picked it myself. :)
ZR> Zaynab
Naomi is 5.5 yrs old. Her sister, Rebekah is 13 and living with her
adopted dad in Medford, Oregon. He is now working in Astoria but
commutes home on the weekends. I will have Bekah for Thanksgiving.
