Wireless Week came in today. There was an interesting article about the
future of wireless. This writer feels, and I agree, that it is a matter of
time before wireless starts to seriously compete with wireline phones. This
will happen when flat rates become available. The writer of the article
figured that once you could get unlimited local calling for around $35 bucks
a month, that would do the trick.
My opinion is that with 5 carriers serving a market, smaller cell sites, and
more spectrum available, this will happen in a few years, maybe sooner
depending on the individual companies aggressivness.
Powertel, a pcs company that serves markets down south has opened up some
markets with a promo that gave you unlimited calling for $50 a month. That's
a steal. The article about Powertel stated that once you signed up for the
plan you could keep it. They offered it for a few months. It was reported in
Wireless Week and other trade magazines.
The days of rediculous airtime charges are numbered.
