The caller ID data is sent between the first and second ring, and a
modem that supports caller ID intercepts that data string (which is
sent at some ridiculously slow speed). The modem then sends that
string to the comm device to do with as it pleases.
There are usually configuration commands you provide the modem to
"format" the data string to match what your comm software is willing
to accept.
I don't have CID, so I can't tell you much more.
