Depends on what you mean by "activation scheme".  The actual activation 
data and algorithm is in the registry.  It's encrypted in several places 
but primarily derived by using a generated Product ID made up of the 
version/type of OS and the installing Product Key.  Of course it's much 
more complicated that just that since it also examines and uses the ENUM 
hardware keys in the registry and so on...

BTW, that generated Product ID I mention above is the way Microsoft has 
been able to block the widely illegal "corporate version" of Pro from 
obtaining updates from the MS update site.
