rc> Modems don't have "drivers". All a modem requires is a proper
rc> configuration string, and if your modem is connecting at 31,200
rc> then without a doubt the string defined as "standard 28.8" is
rc> all you need.
wb> True but they do have configuration files for windows. So
Win95 and NT. Not Win 3.1.
wb> windows knows the settings and options available on that
wb> particular modem. The main reason I want the right 'drivers' is
wb> so I may adjust my the volume of the modem speaker in windows.
wb> The 'standard 28.8' does not allow me to do that.
Sure it does. Just add it to the "Extra settings" box. Anything in
that box gets sent _after_ the other init commands, so it takes
priority.
rc> There are no "magic" modem commands, and no "magic" configuration
rc> strings - and the config in general will not cause your modem to
rc> connect at a speed lower than the line conditions permit. Just
rc> use your modem: a new config won't improve its performance.
wb> I think you are under the wrong impression. I had a USR 14.4
wb> previous to this and if I chose the 'standard 14.4' option I
wb> would get maybe 1300-1400 transfer speeds...once I found out it
wb> was a USR and stored the 'optimal configuration' in the modems
wb> memory (with terminate)
The Terminate config string for USR modems contained several useless
settings - and still does.
I
WB> found I was getting 1400-1600 speeds--with fewer crc's. The init
CRCs immediately indicate flow control problems - about the only
modem config item that must be the same between the modem and the
comm software. Your throughput improved because you sorted out the
flow control - _not_ because of a "magic init". The connect speed
would be the same regardless of the init.
wb> string can and does make a HUGE difference. I have also learned
wb> this through experimenting with my BBS init strings. The init
wb> string is crutial to maximizing your modem's capabilities. I
No, it's crucial to proper configuration. Not "maximizing
capabilities", but _using_ them.
wb> once used a Cardinal 14.4 that simply would not upload
wb> anything...changed the init string and everything was fine...cps
wb> jumped by 100 or so too. If you have a USR and windows detects
wb> it, then you are right, there is nothing you can do to improve
wb> on it.
Sure can. The Win95 inits are deficient in several areas.
wb> When you don't know the brand or what previous owners have
wb> stored in the memory--you would be wise to check it out--that is
wb> what I am trying to do. But I don't know how to figure out what
wb> brand it is--THAT is what I wanted to know. Apparently you
wb> thought otherwise.
Yes, indeed. I did think otherwise. :-) I saw your post as looking
for a way to improve upon the 31,200 connect - and nothing in the
init will do that. Your best bet is to use a terminal program
(Hyperterm is fine) and issue the atin series of commands, starting
with ati1. One of them may mention a manufacturer, or at least a
chipset.
