YOu know I've argued this for a long time. IN fact, if
you've got this echo back a year or so ago Bob K. our good
moderator and I argued here and in other political echoes
that there should be universal service to go along with
universal suffrage. When you are 18 as soon as you graduate from high
school you will arrange to do your two years of
service. Maybe that will be military, maybe it will be
doing something related to your intended career, but you
will do something, whether that something is helping repair
a road, beautify parks, provide summertime day care for
children of the working poor in an outdoor setting, but you
*will* do something that benefits your country and community for two years.
 SO you're in a wheelchair, you'll serve.
Blind, deaf, doesn't matter. WE may not ask MR. blind young man to tote a
rifle, but we might train him up as a diesel
mechanic repairing tank engines, or we might have him doing
something else.
But, since we don't have that, and if we draw down our
forces overseas on the front lines then we may as well get
something out of the balance of their service. After all,
bridges need shoring up, our infrastructure needs repair and replacement.
I'd just as soon pay 'em and get something for my tax dollar and not just
send 'em home to be unemployed
and a burden on somebody.

Regards,
           Richard
