cc invokes the standard Unix C compiler.
gcc invokes the standard GNU C compiler.

Nowadays, you'll find cc only on a few real honest-to-Unix systems. You'll
find gcc everywhere. The only disadvantage of anything coming from GNU is
the relatively odious "Copyleft" or GPL. The problem with that is that any
program you write and wish to distributed which has been linked with gcc's
standard libraries is also bound by the GPL, which means you have to at
least offer to give it away for free. Most distributions of gcc now come
with non-GPL libraries.

One interesting thing about gcc is that many of the big-bucks development
environments have gcc at their compiler core, so what you're buying from
the vendors are their libraries, IDE, debugger, and integration toolset.
