You should find loads of old engineering books on tubes in many libraries.
The primary places where tubes are still actively used are broadcast and
industrial amplifiers outputting KW's of RF. Through 100 KW, many
transmitters are 100% solid state these days.
You might find it interesting to locate some old McIntosh manuals. Also, the
same kind of 3 secondary winding distortion cancelling circuits used
presently on some solid state distortion analyzers for 0.000x% THD plus full
DC and ground isolation have been used on tube audio PA's, though at a couple
orders of magnitude higher distortion levels.
IMHO there's little reason to build a tube audio power amp, unless you're
trying to replicate the defects of certain Fender guitar amps precisely. In
most cases it's cheaper and better functionally to build a solid state amp
with dramatically greater headroom. "Tube sound" can be created at lower
levels requiring less maintenance and cheaper parts.
I have an old tube amp which might be available if someone is really
interested in a Mac clone.
