subject: `Goodbye Old Friend`

This past week, the world said farewell to one of the true
pioneers of modern popular music. Carl Perkins died Momday
(1/22/98) of complications from a series of strokes; he was 65.
This is the third time I have tried to write a short obituary
that focuses on his ability as a guitarist -- each of the two
previous times, I ended up with several dozen lines about his
kindness, philanthropy, devotion to his wife and family, and
all the other thing that made Carl Perkins a highly-regarded
member of his community. It isn't that he wasn't a brilliant
guitarist -- he certainly was! -- but around Jackson, Tennessee,
Carl's musical talent always took a back seat to the qualities
that made him a good citizen, civic leader, and neighbor.
Listen to his music. Read his biography, _Go, Cat, Go!_ (by
Carl Perkins and David McGee, Hyperion, 1996). Watch the
various tributes that will be televised over the next few days,
and the reruns of TV appearances he has made over the years.
His talent is obvious, but keep in mind that Carl was much, much
more than a picker, singer and songwriter. Carl Perkins was
the finest, gentlest, most generous, least pretentious man you
could ever hope to know.
He will definitely be missed.
... Carl Perkins: 1932-1998. "Goodbye, old friend."
