subject: Memory matters

NH> Yes, it's necessary in C/C++ but not in Java.

BS> Hmm.. Then I wonder why is there still memory free on my machine?

Is that free memory contiguous? How does the memory leakage affect the
way subsequent programs load? For a single-user system with lots of
memory on which large system loads are never imposed and if these loads
would never run for more than an hour, there may be no reason to free
the memory.

OTOH, have you noticed an increase in disk accesses without an increase
in processing activity? That may be the start of your disk drive
thrashing itself to death.
