PC>I use PC DOS 7.0's memory management with OD7. This gives much more
PC>conventional memory than the now-obsolete MS-DOS 6.0.
I don't really worry too much about it, as long as I have
enough memory to do what I need to do. With MS6, I have enough
conventional, although upper is a bit tight, with 3 sound card / cd-rom
drivers, mscdex, mouse, and my cache.
OD7 gave me about 10k more lower (which was nice, but no big deal since
the only program I couldn't run with MS6 I still couldn't run with OD7)
and 50k+ upper (because of DPMS with nwcache & nwcdex), but the extra
upper memory really wasn't any big deal because I wasn't needing it and
couldn't find a use for it.
Actually, I could probably go ahead and use dpms, nwcache & nwcdex on
MS-DOS, too. DPMS is not just for ND7/OD7. According to the press
releases and the docs, it's supposed to work on any standard DOS.
PC> CB> I just went ahead and reinstalled MS6. (It has a much
PC> CB> nicer DIR command, for one thing.)
PC>The extended directory options were introduced by DR DOS 6.0. To
PC>maintain compatibilty with MS-DOS they were put into an external
I used to use DR6. The dir and xdir of OD7 are the same as they were
then. And they _S_T_I_N_K_. I didn't like it back then, and I don't
like it now. You'd think that ND7 would have at least provided
compatibility with DOS 5's DIR. Or a dircmd. And the 'permanant'
setting of DR6/OD7's dir command was anything but permanant.
If you are going to use ND7/OD7, a command.com replacement is a must.
PC>utility XDIR. OD7 continues to use XDIR. As for nicer commands, try
PC>this with MS-DOS 6.x:
PC> FORMAT A: uv
PC>With DR DOS 6.0, ND7 and OD7 that will format the disk unconditionally
PC>without pausing for a volume label despite the fact that the syntax
PC>should be
PC> FORMAT A: /u /v:
"uv" instead of "/u /v:" is no big deal. Considering floppies
come formated these days, most people rarely use the format command.
PC>Many of the OD7 commands are similarly forgiving. E.g. ATTRIB
PC>filename +rsh instead of ATTRIB +r +s +h filename.
I don't know about that. I rarely ever change system or hidden
attributes. The only things I mess with are the read attribs. And I
usually use LIST for that. (Which doesn't operate properly with
DR6/ND7/OD7)
