BQ>Yes, the circumcision "pony" did have its interesting points. It just got
BQ>to the point where it seemed so many people thought it was on the best
BQ>seller list, or something, and just couldn't get to the last page.
BQ>An interesting thing happened to a friend of mine recently. He is just a
BQ>kid in his early seventies, but I still can't fathom how it could happen.
BQ>While taking a shower, he was washing the foreskin, as any half smart
BQ>uncircumcised male would do, when the darn thing got stuck in the cocked
BQ>position.
That is an interesting story! When I was working at a state institution
for the mentally retarded I had a profoundly retarded young male suffer
the same problem. He had been "cocked" for 72 hours before the higher
ups decided to send us to the county hospital (Miami, Fl.) Since we
couldn't get pants on the poor man we had to wrap him in a blanket.
Normally Jackson Memorial has about a four hour wait even if you are
dying. But, I told the aide with me not to interfere with our young
patient and that I would take care of things. In about two minutes, he
was jumping on the chairs and taking his blanket off. What should have
been a 4 hours wait turned out to be 4 minutes!
The doctor in this case, decided to remove a valve in the one of the
man's veins. The good side was that his problem would be solved. The
bad side was that he would never "cock" his gun again. Well, his mom
was beside herself! What if her 24 year old, profoundly retarded son,
who was living in a state institution do if he decided to get married
and have children?!
After the doc. promised if that ever happened, sonny boy would get an
artificial valve implant at no cost, did the operation proceede!
BQ> CJ> I'm a health services assistant in a day program for mentally
BQ> CJ> handicapped children and adults. I mostly do motor therapy for adults
BQ> CJ> with physical handicaps.
BQ>Quite a mix. Must be very interesting. Not sure what motor therapy is, but
BQ>a few years ago, I had extensive therapy for a back problem. Even though
BQ>it was later learned that the difficulty was Spinal Stenosis. While the
BQ>therapy should really have had no beneficial affect, (according to the
BQ>doctor) certain portions of the treatment did reduce the pain level a
reat
BQ>deal. At that time for extended periods, but now I hurt all the time.
It is an interesting mix. The motor therapy is range of motion and gait
training and strengthening exercises mostly. I do the same work as a
Physical Therapist for about 1/5 the pay!
BQ> CJ> I pass
BQ> CJ> medication, do first aid, and serve on the in-house medical crisis
BQ> CJ> team. I am a Red Cross CPR and First Aid Instructor.
BQ>Never got past what was then called an Advanced First Aid card, but it
BQ>really didn't make all that much difference. Seems like I was always
aking
BQ>care of someone, or doing some radical medical procedure (for a layman)
BQ>out of necessity. When you were a state policeman in the foot hills of the
BQ>Cascade Mountains in the mid forties, this can happen with fair
gularity.
I'll be you did some radical sorts of things out on the road like that!
So far the most interesting to me was helping remove sutures. Probably
the smartest was to make sure that a woman who had just falled wasn't
improperly moved. She had a broken femur and would have bled out
otherwise.
BQ> CJ> When I'm not playing at medicine at work, I also try to keep myself
n
BQ> CJ> line as a diabetic of 23 years and have had coronary artery disease
BQ> CJ> for the last 5 years.
BQ>I can relate to that Chris. While I am not a diabetic myself (yet), my
BQ>father was for nearly 40 years. His father, my paternal grand father, died
BQ>of the disease in 1914. Dad was diagnosed as a diabetic back in the days
BQ>when the medical profession was still treating the disease pretty much on
BQ>an experimental basis. Couldn't begin to tell you how many times I had to
BQ>help him when he had an insulin reaction, but it began when I was still a
BQ>young boy and continued till the day he died at age 70. That was 34 years
BQ>ago.
1914 wasn't a good year to be diabetic! It's still pretty experimental,
as things go. I'm taking a combination of oral medications, and two
different insulins. Sounds like you got passed by on the diabetes
though. COngratulations!!
BQ>Sound like me. I also search for and disseminate information to friends
nd
BQ>acquaintance that have physical problems. So it keeps me busy searching
or
BQ>things anywhere between chelation therapy and Guillian Barre'.
Ah chelation! That would start (in the beginning) some interesting
message threads!
