BG> EP> I don't think anyone has a "formula" we can put into words. I
BG> EP> know someone who stays in a sleeping bag while in a tree
BG> EP> stand; but I've never used the bag the way you do. Maybe I'll
BG> EP> give it a try;
BG>Well, it sure makes laying on the ground a lot more comfortable in 20
degree
BG>weather. I also took a large piece of 3ml plastic and cut it to the size
f
BG>the sleeping bag and attached it to the bottom of the bag. It doesn't
effect
BG>the rolling up of the bag for storage and it keeps moisture from seeping
BG>into the bag .
I usually put down a smaller piece of plastic if I'm sitting in
a temporary blind; for the same reason. EP
BG> EP> although a 300 yard shot would be considered a
BG> EP> *long* shot around here.
BG>I know a lot of people here in Texas that won't take a shot over 100 to
50
BG>yards. But those people don't spend the spring and summer going out to the
BG>rifle range two or three times a week shooting at 300 yards targets. I
ake
BG>a living as a carpenter/painter. I don't work construction. I do repairs
and
BG>paint for people who only want one or two rooms painted. You would be
BG>surprised about how much work you can get doing a lot of small jobs,
because
BG>most contracters want the big jobs. Therefor I can set my schedule so that
I
BG>can have a lot of afternoons off to go to the range and still make a
living.
BG>I am fortunate that way.
        I'll say you're fortunate. (-: EP
BG> EP> Don't you feel restricted in the arc you can cover that way?
BG>One of my favorite places to hunt is about 100 feet up the side of a
anyon
BG>wall. It is a little plateau about ten by 8 that gives me lots of cover
from
BG>the valley floor. It is at the end of a valley with a dirt road in it that
BG>is about 500 yards long and about 200 yards wide. The floor of the valley
BG>has a lot of Mesquite and sage bushes. It is good cover for the deer,
ntil
BG>they start to cross the road. I have taken several good sized doe and a
BG>couple of large buck on that road.Just before the road goes down into the
BG>valley, it takes a sharp bend. I park my truck there and walk about 100
BG>yards and then climb up the side of the canyon to my shooting spot. When I
BG>shoot a deer I climb down , walk back to the truck, and drive up to the
deer
BG>and load him on . Being at one end of the valley, I don't really need that
BG>much of an arc. I also carry a .45 Paraordnance in the event he wants to
BG>climb in the sleeping bag with me.:-)
BG> For a couple of years there I was talked into hunting from a blind
BG>by a friend of mine. I didn't shoot many deer that way . I have gone back
to
BG>my kind of hiding. It is not as comfortable as sitting in a heated ,
BG>insulated blind, but it gets more deer. And I believe that is what we are
BG>out there for. (G)

Agreed on that. Around here, I think I'm better off being able
to turn and cover a wider arc; but who's to say? Ernie P.
