I'll second that. I just did two 4.25" mirrors off of one kit (they
vary the amount of abrasives by mirror size). I only came close to running
out of the 80 grit, but didn't. Everything else was entirely adequate,
including pitch. I think there's enough 12 and 5 micron to do a half dozen
mirrors. And I went way off base with polishing the first mirror (about 40
hours' worth) and still had plenty of cerium oxide for another mirror.

Go ahead and start the 2 mirrors. If you run out of #80, you can order
just that size.

I did the 2 mirrors in parallel to minimize cross contamination, and for
cross comparison. That is, I'd do the next grade on one mirror, using the
other as a handy comparison to tell if I'd ground the surface enough, then
bring the 2nd mirror along to that grade. It worked well -- no scratches,
and the 2nd mirror polished out and figured in much less time since I've
learned a lot from the first mirror and it is fresh in my head.

Hi Bill
If you use the usual amounts, the coarse grit will
be consumed the fastest. It also depends on how efficient you are with the
grit. Most put way too much time between adding grit and then grind too
long without adding more. You get the best effects by using very small
amounts often, instead of large amounts for long times. It is normal to
only get 4 to 5 strokes before adding more grit with the coarse grits. Use
a salt shaker for your coarse grits as well to help control the amount and
distribution.
Usually the finer grits are enough to do a couple of
mirrors.
Dwight
