subject: Plink loads

JR> I've wondered about buying some of them for plinker loads for my 30
JR> but if they're that far off, I'll just stick to my regular bullets.
JR> I can get some hardcast bullets locally for 30-06 plinkers that com
JR> several sizes, a .309 dia 150gr FN, 115gr RN and a 100gr SWC. I've
JR> these same brand hardcast bullets (Magnus Bullet Co.) for my .44mag
JR> 45acp and 45-70 and gotten good results.
JR> I noticed that this same company also has some .32 cal bullets avai
JR> in 100gr SWC, 118gr FN and 98gr WC all in .313 dia, which makes the
JR> .32 Mag a little more interesting for use as a reloadable trail gun
RO>I finally found my way back on to a good BBS, but am still having
RO>trouble getting the conference picked up. Sysop has promised to get it
RO>on line eventually. I have been looking for some good lead plinking
RO>loads for my 300 Win, '06, 30-30 and 270. Have you experimented with
RO>any of these and which loads have proved to be good ones and who's
RO>reloading book did you find them in. Have you experienced much leading
RO>in the barrels and do they use gas seals? I have not experimented any
RO>with lead slugs in my modern smokeless powder firearms. Have always
RO>wanted to but was a little concerned about how much trouble it was to
RO>deal with lead build up and how to get it out. What has your experienc
RO>been?
I got a message from Ed Harris that the Remington 150 gr bullet would be
a better choice to use as a plinking bullet. It's the bullet made for a 30-30
rifle. The smaller gr lead bullets didn't have enough bearing surface on them
to
be accurate enough. On my loads for the .44 mag, .45acp and 45-70, I got my
loads out of Lyman #47 manual. I keep the .44 mag loads down around 1000fps
and
with a hardcast bullet there isn't much of a leading problem. I clean them
after
use with some Ed's Red, a gun cleaning formula that's posted here once a
month
and is some good stuff and cheap to make yourself. With the 45-70 loads
round
1715fps, I get some leading, but can clean most of it out by soaking the
barrel
with the Ed's Red. It's good to see you on here with us, all the guys in this
conference are a bunch of great guys and you will enjoy them.
