Re: pitch lap -- I found that I can use one of those battery driven
   styrofoam cutters to cut the edges.  It's sometimes slow going and
   it wants to reseal behind the wire, so two or three cuts are
   necessary sometimes, but it doesn't leave too much of a mess.
