I've been doing some research, and that program that Robert downloaded was a 
cut/paste of open source code from several different places, and then 
abandond.

I'm looking at the original code, and it's called News Portal 
(http://florian-amrhein.de/newsportal).  This is some pretty old code, and 
there have been several attempts (open source) to improve on it by others.

Look at this one; "MyNewsGroups" (http://mynewsgroups.sourceforge.net) 
Although this application isn't tied into PhPBB, it uses MySQL as a message 
base and they seem to have fixed some of the parsing errors.  This is most 
certainly a step in the right direction.
