Ages back ( i may have made this prediction here as well) I predicted or
indeed wondered why armies, airforces & navies insist on different
& massively expensive SAM/AAM missle systems where designing a long
range AAM & a long range SAM is normally a matter of fitting the right
radars to trucks, ships & aircraft & possibly putting discard able
booster sections onto the tail sections of SAM's.

Looks like more & more are adopting this approach finally. OK so
shrinking budgets play their part but it's also "a good idea".

Invest in making the best damn aircraft killer/cruise missile/atgm/asm you
can & then fit it across the services. Truck/ship/plane mounted exocet,
AMRAAM, tomahawk etc.etc.

Single set of missiles to buy, service & maintain, train on etc. &
the more adaptable the mounter the more survivable e.g. Amraam on the back
of 4X4 with a radar anywhere from a balloon to an AWACS to a ship off the
coast.
