a few pieces of software ARE updated for such low prices is a
marvelous tribute to the loyalty and dedication of the existing
TOS/GEM programmers and developers. But don't think for a moment
that such pricing structures are profitable. TOS/GEM programmers on
this continent are hanging on by their fingernails. Believing
otherwise is a very big mistake. This nonsense about expecting
programmers and developers to survive and continue working for our
computing benefit . . . for $5 or $10 update fees is absolutely
ridiculous.
HC> the vast majority of developers, such an approach is
HC> tantamount to outright suicide.
RR> Well, by that I guess it is all futile so why bother writing
RR> any Atari programs whatsoever?
Rodney: that is precisely the reason why so many major developers
HAVE disappeared! Only the toughest diehards have been able to hang
in: Gribnif, Oregon Research, Trace Technologies, A & D, Current
Notes, ABC Solutions, TOAD, COMPO, Migraf (barely), DMC,
Missionware, Anodyne, Clear Thinking, Cybercube, ICD, chro_Magic,
Binary Sounds, Its' All Relative, Homa, and a few little guys such
as Frank Pawlowski (Outburst). But that's it! For ACE '95 I had a
hard time finding 20 major (sic) developers!
Too many existing users are sitting around with TOS 1.0 and TOS
1.02, ancient computers, and ancient software. These people HAVE
been sent advertising: online, in the magazines, in mailings, in the
TOAD and Computer Direct and ABC catalogs. But they don't upgrade
their systems, and at the same time lament the fact that the new
applications which ARE being developed and hyped won't run on their
antiquated machines. They want instant satisfaction with the latest
applications on TOS 1.02, ST Low and 2.5 megs of RAM and a Megafile
20.
Give me a break.
