Vaccination in general removed one of the major speed bumps in
humanity's road, as has learning about disease and vectors and
the need to be clean. Salk's vaccine has the same "downside" as
all medical advancements: it widens the highway to eventual mass
starvation. Of course science also keeps ahead of the curve in
industrialized nations that can afford to pay corporate extortion
to feed their populace.
A significant percentage of the Earth's populace is infested with
HIV and I can't imagine how humanity will be able to stop Mother
Earth from "pruneing" the mass of humanity down. It's a bitch
to have to suggest it but eventually humanity's going to pay big
for having invented medical sciences where evolution doesn't
cull.
Um, hell, when our primate ancestors learned to steal protein from
its fellow animal neighbors, that, too, led to larger populations
perpetually on the edge of starvation with a few generations of
well fed primates in between. What I think we're seeing now is
much the same: "white" nations are well fed thanks to science but
when we hit ten billion people, that's going to change. Vaccines
and medical science in general is going to be the cause.
I'm not usually given to predictions but humans aren't going to
impose mandatory zero population growth until it's far too late
and vaccination has made the time when mass starvations are the
norm around the world that much sooner.
