Not a dumb question at all.  Many people mask the outer 1/16th - 1/4 inch
of their mirror to eliminate edge problems. An easy way to do it is to
place the coated mirror on a slow turntable and use a sharpie. First mask
the bevel, and then mask whatever portion of the outer edge you are
interested in removing.
