A CD ROM drive has some optics inside in order to project light from  ( IR,
I think) LED on the small spot on the CD and collect reflected light. Since
the spot is really small and if you can get hold of the
faulty CD ROM drive, perhaps  you can use part of this optics for injecting
 visible LED light into the fiber.
