As a follow up, I attached a dial indicator to the cell to detect movement
of the primary. From zenith to horizon the mirror moved laterally
0.003" due to the pads shearing, and there was no detectable movement
in any other direction. I consider that to be a good result. The thing is
still going strong, and if the clouds ever clear out of here I may get to
use it someday.
