A 10 or 12 inch tube ought to be pretty darn stiff even if made of Silly Putty!
Perhaps your tube is "oil canning", that is, becoming oval in
the middle under
the bending stress. Perhaps some stiffening rings near the middle (dare I write
the word baffle?) might clear up the problem.
