What exactly are you wanting to do with the other machines? Will they need
direct internet access?

If you are only planning to use things like WWW, FTP, email etc then you
can set up the freebsd box as a proxy.

Otherwise, you'll need to fiddle with IP masquerading. I have no idea how
it's done with FreeBSD...

Make sure you have the kernel src installed (/usr/src/sys). Go to
/usr/src/sys/i386/conf and copy GENERIC to something else like CURL. Edit
that file, commenting out what you don't need. (Note! I'd just comment out
obvious things like a 2nd SCSI controller and the multitude of network
cards supported. Be conservative until you get the feel of it.)

If you need to add a device, look in LINT which has everything you could
possibly have in a kernel.

Some devices may be required unconditionally, and some functions may need
more than one keyword or device configured to work. Comment your lines,
rather than deleting them, so you can go back if something doesn't work.

Then:

config CURL
cd ../../compile/CURL
make depend
make

If that works with no errors, then finally:

make install

... and reboot.

If you get stuck, then at the boot prompt you can enter
"kernel.GENERIC" (copy of the generic kernel) or
"kernel.old" (old kernel before last recompile) to allow you to
boot and reconfigure the dud kernel.

Cheers.
