Yep, the mirror needs to be on the bottom.  Do a bit of chordal strokes and
then go over the center to get the curve closer to the bottom.  You will
notice that the center won't grind very much doing this so your depth
(which really is already too deep) won't change very much.  Do the Sharpie
test to insure that you don't do the bottom of the hole until you are ready
to finish up the curve with the 80 grit.  Finish up the curve with the 120
grit as this will get you going on getting the deep cracks out of the glass
from the 80 grit.  Don't go past 220 grit until you have a nice curve in
the glass.
