| subject: | RE: MS-DOS 6.22 |
From: "da Silva, Joe" When the whole MS-DOS 6.22 thread started, the first thing that came into my head was : Why??? (Why not 7.10?!) Not only doesn't MS-DOS 6.22 support FAT32, it also doesn't support LBA. This means VERY bad things will happen if you try to access anything above 8G (7.8?) with MS-DOS 6.22! With that in mind, it should be safe to restrict MS-DOS 6.22 to partitions below this limit. To support anything above 8G (7.8?), you need both : 1. A BIOS that provides Extended Int $13 functions (ie. LBA support) AND 2. An O/S that knows how to use the above (aka. LBA support). You can add the first, if required, by installing Ontrack Disk Manager 9.X (there were OEM versions available for free from Seagate and the like, not sure if that's still available). This uses about 5K of your conventional memory, IIRC. There may be other drivers that add similar BIOS support, perhaps the EZ-BIOS you mention, not sure. As for the O/S, I'm not aware of anything that will provide the LBA support to MS-DOS 6.22. You can try instead : MS-DOS 7.XX (preferably 7.10, which adds FAT32) PC-DOS 7.10 (yes, it does exist - OEM only) Enhanced OpenDOS 7.01 (see http://drdosprojects.de/) FreeDOS 1.x ROMDOS 7.10 others (?) Of course, MS-DOS 7.10 is available as Windoze 95A through 98SE. Just add the following to the [Options] section of the hidden MSDOS.SYS file : BootGUI=0 Logo=0 Joe. > Joe da Silva Senior Electronic Engineer Landis+Gyr Phone: +61 2 9690 7309 joe.dasilva{at}landisgyr.com http://www.landisgyr.com/ Manage Energy Better -----Original Message----- > From: Kevin Klement [mailto:ccoky{at}iglou.com] > Sent: Thursday, October 01, 2009 8:28 AM > To: opendos{at}delorie.com > Subject: Re: MS-DOS 6.22 > > > Originally to: mark lewis > > Hi mark, > > > the disk volume label is maximum 11 characters... it may be > > zero or more but is limited to 11... > > Say Question? > > I know MS-DOS FAT16 can only partition 2GB drive, I have a > 200GB drive and I > want to use MS-DOS 6.22 on it, and make some extended > partitions, you know may > be C: D: E: F: etc... > > I had a program called EZ-BIOS to fool the BIOS into doing > this, but I cant > find it, any suggestion on a good program to do this? > > Kevin > klement{at}gypsy-designs.com > > ...
