A 10:1 magnification of the movement of the stage points to a reading on a machinist's scale or other fairly accurate inch ruler. FWIW, scrap lumber from almost anywhere is good material for making a tester. It usually costs me little more than $10 to make a tester, the largest cost being the dial indicator at $8 from Harbor Freight.
