Death of Oleg Grigorievich Makarov

3 Jun 2003

The management and the cosmonaut corps of S.P.Korolev Rocket and
Space Corporation Energia regret to inform about the sudden death on
May 28, 2003, in the 71st year of his life, of the pilot-cosmonaut of
the USSR, twice Hero of the Soviet Union, professor

OLEG GRIGORIEVICH MAKAROV

Upon graduating from Bauman Moscow Higher Technical School in 1957,
Oleg Makarov started working at Special Design Bureau number one (now
RSC Energia) rising from an engineer to a Deputy Head of Division. In
1966 Oleg Makarov was selected for cosmonaut training.

On September 27-29, 1975 he made his first space flight on board
Soyuz-12. On April 5, 1975 he made his second flight, where, in an
off-nominal situation, he evinced courage and heroism and
demonstrated his ability to work under the most difficult situations.

In January 1978 and in November-December 1980 he made space flights
on-board space station Salyut-6.

Upon completing these four missions, Oleg Makarov continued working
in the Design Bureau, participated in the programs of space station
Mir and Energia-Buran, made a significant contribution to the design
and development of ground control systems.

In 1980 he defended a thesis, and was appointed to a professorship.
Till his death he continued teaching, passing on his experience in
design and testing of space technology to new generations of
engineers and scientists. Oleg Makarov's creative approach,
initiative, highly responsible personal behavior, inventive thinking,
his understanding and caring about people deservedly earned him a
good reputation and respect. His country showed high appreciation of
Oleg Makarov's services by bestowing upon him the title of
Pilot-Cosmonaut of USSR, the title of twice the Hero of the Soviet
Union, and awarding him four orders of Lenin and other decorations.

The cherished memory of Oleg Makarov will forever live in our hearts.
A civil memorial service will take place on May 31, 2003 at the
following address: Moscow, Khovanskaya st., 3.
