The two images would be scaled and subtracted, yielding an intensity pattern that could be used to deduce the shape of the mirror..Suiter's descriptions of the star test are an empirical eyeball method of doing this. <<< Sounds similar to what Benoit Schillings was discussing years ago with respect to adaptive optics. The resulting pattern of light would be used to compute actuator commands to null the light into an even gray.
