The smaller image will indeed be better tho and the problem is that the smaller image will also be dimmer so you will run into a limit at some point. If you are worried about the size of the image of the larger ball, you can always put it further away as the numbers given by the others are just the minimum distance, not the actual distance that you have to put it at.
