subject: checkinstall DEB creation

Any one know how to fix this type of error when using checkinstall to create
DEB's (I am not really interested in getting in to a debate on "proper" DEB
creation since that requires some sort of PhD in DEB'ology. Thanks.)

dpkg-deb: error: parsing file '/var/tmp/tmp.Otb8bYTZPp/package/DEBIAN/control'
near line 8 package 'xxxxxxx':
`Depends' field, syntax error after reference to package `perl'

I am thinking that ` is the problem when it needs to be ' so it can find the
standard perl package....

Where to find this in the stuff this is compiling to fix, as checkinstall nukes
the tmp dir on exit...
