Mmmmm - and charted the physics of static electricity thereby - 
not to mention inventing lightning conductors. But then there's 
his discovery of franklinite (a natural iron-zinc spinel), his  
bi-focal glasses, a range of catheters and the like - all the 
while able to both head the budding USA government, help compose 
its Constitution and represent the lot abroad in Europe.

Did you know that he and the French scientist, Lavoisier 
(discoverer of oxygen) were commissioned by the last French 
monarch to determine the truth of Mesmer's claims that magnetism 
affected mammals ?

And that their experiments proved absolutely that there were no 
such effects,  and have been validated by every repetition of 
their experimental approach every since ?

Not that that history or science stops the great magnetic 
bed/bracelet/amulet cons of today....

Not bad for an apprenticed printer and journalist, methinks.
