If we're still trying to explain the different focal ratios,and which focal
length scope to purchase or make for ones self. There are many ways to
explain how they are all different functionally. But, to truly understand
is to physically compare one from the other. I would suggest going to a
local astronomy group and look through many different types of scopes, or
go to a Star Party and do the same.
I thought I was doing good with my 10 f/6,until I looked through a club
members 16 in f/4.5, wow, did I want one of those. Oh, and when I looked
through a 36 inch f/5, wow!,wow!.wow!!!!! The objects in each one just kept
getting bigger and brighter.
You really need to look into different scopes, then decide what you want
and what you can afford.
