Actually, I read that it only supports up to 31200 BPS Tx, since its
maximum symbol rate is 3200 rather than 3249. This is a tad disappointing.

Well, considering that 33600 BPS was the supposed maximum speed we could
push data down over phone lines, 40k+ isn't bad at all.
