I think it's a reasonable way to go. I've never done a through-the-back
secondary test, but I did a non-null Hindle sphere secondary test which is
somewhat the same, involving
ray-tracing: source-secondary-sphere-secondary-tester. In a
through-the-back test, the ray-trace would be source-(refraction at back
surface)-front surface-(refraction at back surface)-tester. A mask on the
back surface would make the test quantitative.
