Like some have said, regular disconnection is a pretty fair indication :)

Yes, but some of the earlier raised rubber button ones were crook, too.

There used to be definitive info on which manufacturers and manufacture
date stamps you needed to avoid, sometime before '92 as I recall, but it'll
either work or it won't.  There was also one later Alcatel model with a
dodgy hook switch, that I had one of for a while .. that was tricky, being
intermittent.

Short story is that Telstra will replace _any_ suspect leased phone for
free; simply the cheapest service option.  Plonk it on the desk of the
local TBO ..
