Hi Arthur (and Rod),

SA> no, I dont expect anything over 2400 using a V. protocol
SA> on that line..

RS> Bet you would with V.29

 IS> ? V.29 is a leased-line protocol.

AM> Well, a half-duplex protocol that was used by the then
AM> Telstra for "fast training" modems,

On switched lines?

AM> and is still used by facsimile machines.

I wonder how? Ok, I initially relied on my usually reliable Dataplex
product catalogue's Technical Reference section, defining V.29 as a
"9600bps modem standardised for use on point-to-point 4-wire leased
telephone-type circuits."

AM> Uyless Black or Frank Nitzsche could probably add more detail (-:.

Uyless Black, in the OSI book, from the table of V-Series Interfaces, p.69:

Series Number: V.29 V.29 V.29
Channel Line Speed: 9600 7200 4800
Separation: 4-wire '' '' <<<
Modulation Rate: 2400 '' ''
Carrier Frequency: 1700 '' ''
Use of V.2: Yes '' ''
FDX or HDX: Either '' '' <<<
Sync or Async: Synchronous ''
Modulation Technique: QAM PS PS
Bits Encoded: 4:1 3:1 2:1
Backward Channel: Not Defined
Switched Lines: No No No <<<
Leased Lines: PP 4W PP 4W PP 4W <<<
Use of V.25 Not Defined
Use of V.28: Yes '' ''
ISO Pin Connector: 2110 '' ''
Equalisation: Adaptive '' ''
Scrambler: Yes '' ''

As of 1991, anyway .. was there a revision for switched line (or 2-wire) use?

Cheers, Ian
