It may well. Mindset = a modem equals a wide band high performance ultra
low noise high fidelity preamp, -plus- a fussy bit of analog computing,
-plus- some rather hard driven digital conversion gear. Noise doesn't
help any part of that process. Coupled into the front end, it's disaster.

PH> I agree, although it means I can't listen to my favourite background

Consider yourself lucky. I went through $2700 of "upgrades" and
"repairs" trying to get -one- E7 into usable condition. (It was
the early model - which as it turned out never did work adequately for
anyone. Sigh. It worked for Netcrumb, all too well. I reckon I
purchased at least half of a marble stairway step.)

The current moderately-better-than-rumour analysis of reports has it that
the M34F is reasonably well debugged and working. The Roadster isn't.
Netcomm service is still the pits, according to those who report. (Since
this skews the flavour badly, apply a grain of salt. Since it corresponds
exactly with my own experiences, I consider the grain of salt rather
small...:-)

PH> So what are some of your favourites?

Spirit Dragon is the current consumer of my investment dollars. Cheap,
fast, no visible bugs. Winning combination - although it isn't the
cheapest around.
Has the same superb front end characteristics the early Spirits had - this
one holds onto a line that neither a USR nor a Microcom can keep connected
for as long as 5 minutes. Full throughput at that. I like.

Regards,
Dave Hatch.
